about the owner

Dr. Thomas' professional and mathematical foundation was laid at institutions that valued the importance of teaching and learning in higher education.  Encouraged by the opportunity to prepare students with the analytical skills needed to compete in a global and diverse world, she understands the integral role gender and racial diversity plays in the advancement of STEM disciplines.

Evelyn has been profiled in SIAM NEWS (the news journal of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM)) by acclaimed author Manil Suri, as one of 16 Ph.Ds in mathematics in 2012 awarded to African-American women in the entire U.S.

Dr. Thomas has a passion for teaching.  At Howard University, Evelyn served as an instructor for Applied Calculus and College Algebra 2, as well as a teaching associate for graduate level courses designed to prepare graduate students for careers in the professoriate.  She also served as a lab instructor/teaching assistant for College Algebra (all levels), Pre-Calculus (all levels), Applied Calculus, Calculus 1, and Differential Equations.

It was also at Howard that Dr. Thomas received additional instructional training through the Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) Program.  She increased her knowledge of the American higher education system and contemporary issues impacting upon the system, in addition to, an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a faculty member, as related to teaching, learning outcomes, research, service, mentoring, and retention.

As an Assistant Professor at Bennett College in Greensboro, NC (a small, historically black, women’s liberal arts institution), Evelyn taught College Algebra and Finite Mathematics.

She has the ability to instruct at teaching, career-focused, research institutions, and those serving underrepresented groups and non-traditional students.

As a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UMBC, she expanded upon her experience as the instructor of Introduction to Differential Equations.

Her teaching experience has also extended beyond the university into the heart of the community, through correctional education programs designed to aid ex-offenders as they re-enter society and the tutoring of students with learning disabilities.

Dr. Thomas as a Researcher

Dr. Thomas' teaching methodology has been greatly influenced by her research.  Her area of interest lies in mathematical biology; specifically, the modeling of sexually transmitted/communicable diseases, social/sexual behavior, and population dynamics.  She is a published researcher in scientific journals and is currently seeking out new problems that address social issues with real-world impacts on the community.

For more information about her research experience check out her CV.

As a result of her research experience, she created a junior level course “Mathematical Modeling with Social Implications”, at UMBC that introduces undergraduate students to applications of mathematics in ecology, biology, and sociology.  She has also incorporated real-world applications into traditional mathematics courses to diversify the way in which theory is conveyed to undergraduate students.

Dr. Thomas relishes at the opportunity to  work with students in the Baltimore-Washington community.  Schedule a Session Today!!!!
